Who are we?  What Do We Believe?

Quakers share a way of life, not a set of beliefs.

Our unity is based on silent worship where we seek a communal stillness.

Beginning with stillness our faith becomes action.

The Quaker commitment to peace, equality, simplicity, sustainability and truth arise from the conviction that love is at the heart of existence and that all human beings are unique and equal

Our neighbours at Blackheath Quaker Meeting are on YouTube:

We are very much like them, just not quite as good at making videos!

We are a mutually supportive and outward looking community.  We come in a wide range of ages, life circumstances and educational backgrounds, welcoming people of all faiths or none, and of any ethnic background.

What Do We Do?

Quakers work actively to make this a better world.  We are particularly concerned with
  • human rights and economic justice  based on our belief in the equality of all human beings
  • peace in all its forms
  • environmental sustainability– we seek to live simply so that all may simply live
  • community life, within Quakers and beyond

Are Quakers Christian?

Picture

Although others usually regard us as a Christian denomination, many of us do not see ourselves as Christians; some regard themselves as members of a universal religion that for historical reasons has many Christian elements. Tolerance is part of the Quaker approach to life, so Quakers are willing to learn from all other faiths and churches and from each other.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) has been in existence for 350 years. It is essentially Christian in its origins, but takes its inspiration more widely. We are inclusive and open-minded and are rather different from most Christian denominations through our central value of shared silence, the absence of formal liturgy, ordained ministers and creeds. We believe that there is something of God in everybody and that each human being is of unique worth. This is why we value all people equally, and oppose anything that may harm or threaten them. Quakers seek religious truth in inner experience and place great reliance on conscience as the basis of morality. We emphasise direct experience of God rather than ritual and ceremony.
